Watercolor Maps: The Detail Your Guests Will Never Forget
When most people think of wedding stationery, they think of invitations, RSVP cards and programs. But one of my favorite pieces to create is something a little unexpected: a custom watercolor map.
More Than Directions
Instead of sending guests a screenshot from a plain digital map, imagine handing them a beautifully illustrated guide to your wedding weekend. Suddenly, getting from Point A to Point B feels less like a chore and more like a scavenger hunt; an extension of your wedding experience.
Finding the Right Scale
There are two primary types of wedding maps: city maps and venue maps. Both approaches can be incredibly helpful, depending on your wedding plans! Later in this article, I’ll share examples of both; a city map I designed for the Ox Restaurant in Portland, OR, and a venue map I created for the Gardens at Riverside in Albany, OR.
Adaptable for Every Step of the Way
One of the things I love about custom maps is how flexible they are: They can be incorporated directly into your invitation suite, uploaded to your wedding website, distributed as handouts for guests at the venue, or printed as a large sign at the entrance! No matter how they’re used, maps become another touchpoint for your wedding’s visual identity.
What Do You Actually Need on a Wedding Map?
Let’s take a closer look at the details that can be incorporated into a watercolor map for your wedding.
Every map begins with the essentials: where and when important details are happening for your big day. The design often features multiple locations: the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception venues. Sometimes even a welcome party location, the name of the venue and/or the city where the wedding takes place.
From there, we can also tie in locations that would be useful for guests to know. For example, this could include the airport and hotel, and the recommended travel routes between them and your wedding. For a venue map, this could include things like parking areas, entrances, pathways and restrooms.
The Details That Make it Yours
Beyond the title and logistics, unique decorative elements are the key to bringing any watercolor map to life.
For cities, I love including locations that are meaningful to the couple: where they met, had their first date, got engaged, or shared other memorable milestones together. Illustrated icons can also highlight local landmarks, attractions and activities that guests may enjoy exploring while they’re in town, beyond the wedding itself.
This invitation above has examples of those little love story details: the St. John’s Bridge in Portland, a romance novel from Powell’s Books and a cute little coffee cup.
The format of the map is another opportunity to play around: from a custom-shaped cutout map to a folded design- reminiscent of a classic travel map!
Getting Everyone Together
Weddings can be surprisingly difficult to navigate, especially when multiple locations are involved. Guests may be traveling between the airport, hotel, ceremony, reception, and after-party, often in an unfamiliar city.
A custom map helps guests understand how these locations relate to one another geographically, and budget travel time accordingly. Maps become that much more valuable for destination weddings, wedding weekends, or celebrations with a majority of out-of-town guests.
Less Explaining, More Celebrating
One of my favorite benefits is that guests spend less time staring at their phones, constantly switching between apps and addresses that take them out of the moment. With a physical map in hand, guests are able to stay more present with the experience unfolding around them.
It can save you time, too! Questions like “Which hotel is closest to the venue?” “What’s the easiest route to take?” and “Where should we park?” tend to come up again and again. A thoughtfully designed map answers many of these questions before they’re ever asked. The result is fewer texts, emails and phone calls for you to manage during an already busy time!
A Closer Look: The Ox Restaurant Map
For the Ox Restaurant in Portland, OR, I created a folded watercolor map that was included in the invitation suite alongside the invite and RSVP cards.
The piece was designed with the couple’s monogram on the cover, unfolding to reveal a map of Portland. It featured important locations such as the hotel where pre-wedding cocktails would be served the evening before, and how to get from there to the Ox Restaurant. The map illustrated the recommended travel route: what roads to take, and which bridge to cross the Willamette River.
In addition to the map, I created a painting of the restaurant building on the invitation itself. This way, guests would be able to recognize the building once they arrived, and know that the celebration could officially start.
By including this in the envelope alongside invitations, the map would help guests visualize the entire wedding weekend at a glance.
A Closer Look: The Gardens at Riverside Map
I also created a map for the Gardens at Riverside in Albany, OR. The property is expansive, featuring three different themed gardens: the English Garden, Gazebo Garden and Japanese Garden. After speaking with the owner, Jill, I learned that there had been issues navigating the property. It became clear that they needed a guide, especially because there was an open house happening soon!
To solve that problem, I created a detailed illustrated map of the property. The design highlighted the three garden areas, pathways and structures, while incorporating venue-specific botanical elements such as cherry blossoms, weeping willows, and the apple orchard.
The finished map allowed visitors to take a self-guided tour of the property when they arrived, without getting lost in the process.
Putting Your Story on the Map
A custom watercolor map shows guests that every aspect of their experience has been considered, from the moment they receive your invitation to the moment they arrive at your celebration. It adds character, generates excitement, helps guests feel assured, and serves as a lasting keepsake. Functionally, it solves a real problem. Visually, it becomes another touchpoint that reflects the character of the city or venue itself. That’s the magic of thoughtful stationery. It accomplishes a practical purpose while also becoming something meaningful enough to keep.
